Math and Literacy Activities using Scraps of Wrapping Paper [Freebie]

Today I was wrapping presents and as much as I tried to measure the paper to fit the gift perfectly, I inevitably had to cut strips of the wrapping paper off to wrap them just right. I was cleaning up the table and this pile of wrapping paper strips was staring at me. I couldn't let this cute wrapping paper go to waste! So I thought of a few fun literacy and math activities using scrap pieces of wrapping paper you have lying around.

Fun literacy and math activities using scrap pieces of wrapping paper you have lying around. Easy and low-prep!

I wrote letters on these strips of wrapping paper to practice letter name and letter sound fluency. It's about that time of year for another round of DIBELS or AIMSweb assessments and this would make practice fun! I wrote letters on several strips of paper and put them in the cute Santa bag. During small group, my little scholars can pull out a strip and say the letter names or letter sounds as quickly as they can.

I wrote numbers on the scrap wrapping paper strips to practice number identification fluency. As a warm-up before small group math, my little scholars can choose a wrapping paper strip from the bag and identify the numbers as quickly as possible.

I also wanted to use the scrap of wrapping paper to make a center my little scholars could do independently. I wrote a series of letters on each small strip with a missing letter. My little scholars will say the letters, identify the letter that is missing, and record the series of letters on the recording sheet. I placed the strips in a stocking for a little novelty--I know they'll love it!

I did the same thing except using numbers for this next center idea. My little scholars will pull a wrapping paper strip out of the stocking, says the numbers, identify the number that is missing, and write the series of numbers on the recording sheet.

I love including a recording sheet for accountability and you can download one to use by clicking the picture below.

Number Sort [Freebie!]

Quite an eventful day couple of days, y'all. It started last week when one of my most darling, helpful, kind, sweeties was abruptly withdrawn from school. My heart just broke because of the circumstances of it all. As I left the office after saying goodbye, I was told I'd have a new student joining my class the following day. Not knowing what to expect the following day, I informed my kiddos about our new student and reminded them to make smart choices so we can show our new friend how to act. Well, new student came and my classroom was turned upside down. We somehow managed to survive and had the most wonderful surprise yesterday. My sweetie who withdrew waltzed through the door announcing that she was coming back to our school. I nearly cried and my kiddos were so excited. There was all sorts of hugging and cheering...it was adorable! I am so thankful for the terrific group of kiddos I have this year, even my new little friend. :)

Moving on...we've been working on developing number sense and I created this number sort to use during math centers. There are 6 cards for each number: numeral, number word, tens and ones, objects, tallies, and ten frames. Just click the picture to grab it for F-R-E-E!

And one last thing, National Board Take One! scores will be released tomorrow morning... eeeeek! I may not be sleeping much tonight. Be on the lookout for more freebies :)

Monster Munch Subtraction

I introduced subtraction to my kiddos this week and we're starting to get the hang of it. While working in small groups yesterday, I had an aha moment! (Any other Oprah lovers out there?) We were using simple math work mats to model subtraction problems when I noticed my kiddos had trouble distinguishing from the cubes that they had subtracted and cubes that were the difference. We practiced and practiced and practiced some more and some of my sweet things were still confused. The light bulb went on and I thought about giving them a plastic cup to put the cubes that they "took away" in. This way, they were out of sight and they were no longer confused when counting how many they had left. My kiddos became much more successful when they each had a cup to model subtraction.

That little on-a-whim idea turned into a new Monster Munch Subtraction game. We played it today and my kiddos had a ball! The students draw a card, look at the first number (minuend) and place that many cubes on the plate. Then, students look at the second number (subtrahend) and "feed" the monster that many cubes. They count the cubes left on the plate to find the difference! I used a plastic cup as the monster's "mouth" and students kept the cubes in a sandwich bag the monster's snack bag. I will be using it in small group for the next week or so then will move it to a work station after. I have included an I Can chart and a recording sheet if you choose to use them. You can grab it at my TPT store and I'm also adding it to my Monster Math Pack!

[Our subtraction anchor chart]

[Just put a plastic cup over the monster's mouth and you're ready to play!]

TGIF friends!

Crazy Weather=Freebie!

We are having same cuh-razy weather right now and a huge storm (including a tornado warning....yikes!) is headed our way. I was planning on getting to bed early tonight but I just can't get to sleep until I know the storm has passed. I've been working on a Monster Math pack for a while now and was hoping to finish it this week and I thought since I'm still up I'd give you a sneak peek! The pack will include number words, tallying, telling time to the hour and half hour, patterns, and addition. Are there any skills that you would like me to include?

Head over to my TPT store to grab it! Let me know what you think, I'd LOVE some honest feedback!

Update: If you are one of the 10 who have already downloaded it, do me a favor and grab the edited version. This fear of tornados got the best of me and I forgot how to number, apparently! :)

Oops! and a New Freebie

Did anyone else catch the tiny mistake in the Pirate Addition pack? Thank you, Carin, for pointing it out! I'm such a perfectionist so I cannot believe I would post something with a mistake for the whole wide web to see. Alas, you can grab the edited version right here!

It was a whirlwind of a week with only 3 days of school and so much to cram in! I was working on my math work stations a bit this week and made a new I Can Chart for ten frame fun. You can grab the I Can Chart, ten frame, and math talk card right here!

My Donors Choose project was funded over the holiday break (Hallelujah!) so I will be receiving an LCD projector soon! While I don't have a SmartBoard or Promethean board, I have installed the software on my Mac so I can use flipcharts. Does anyone have any calendar or math meeting flipcharts they would love to share? In the meantime, I'll be playing around with the software and you can bet I'll post anything I create!

Have a fab-u-lous weekend!

Alligator, Alligator!

We just finished teaching greater than, less than, and equal to this past week. We used this chant

We also made cute little alligators with popsicle sticks and googly eyes from One Extra Degree. I'm going to introduce the work station that goes along with it this week.

Math Work Stations and More!

I recently purchased Debbie Diller's awesome book Math Work Stations and cannot put it down! The book has wonderful explanations, pictures, and tips on how to implement work stations effectively in your classroom.  I hope to start using work stations in the next couple of weeks! Do you use math work stations in your classroom? I'd love insight from your experience.

In news unrelated to math work stations, we recently progress monitored our students using DIBELS and I am so proud of the growth my students have made! We practice nonsense words with I Want Candy! Nonsense Word Game. They absolutely LOVE it and are totally catching on.

Hope y'all have a wonderful week! Promise to update soon :)
